Opportunities for African students: New BMZ scholarship program with the East African Community

On April 9 2018, the Parliamentary State Secretary of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Dr. med. Maria Flachsbarth, and the Secretary General of the East African Community (EAC), Liberat Mfumukeko, kicked off a new EAC scholarship program.

The scholarship program with a funding volume of five million euros is aimed at highly qualified African students - especially women - who are unable to finance their own master's degree programs. The scholarship will cover tuition fees, travel and living expenses as well as exchange semesters, internships, training and network events. The focus will be on the STEM subjects of Mathematics, Computer Science, Natural Sciences, Technology and Economics. The scholarship program is part of the  Marshall Plan with Africa presented by Federal Minister Gerd Müller.

The Federal German Government has been working with the EAC for twenty years and has since supported the East African Community with around 285 million euros. Funding priorities include regional economic integration and health care.
